Are you using URL shorteners? Read this!

I found this very interesting since I use URL shorteners very often, probably daily!

Dutch web monitoring company WatchMouse has done a thorough analysis of uptime and performance of 14 major URL shortening services, with quite disheartening results.

As it turns out, only two of these (goo.gl and twt.tl) have had a perfect uptime record between 02/14/2010 and 03/16/2010; the rest of the pack mostly had minor uptime issues, while snurl.com and tr.im had uptime below 99%.

When it comes to performance, measured in the same time period, most URL shorteners can only be characterized as slow. Most of them add more than half a second to the time it takes to open a link; Facebook’s fb.me has been by far the slowest, while only Google’s goo.gl and youtu.be can really be called fast, both averaging around 350 miliseconds.

Given the popularity of URL shorteners on social networks such as Twitter, this is a big deal. Simply put, while URL shorteners do provide a useful service, they’re also making the web considerably slower.

WatchMouse has also launched an online URL shortener performance monitor located at the (ironically, not very short) address http://url-shorteners.public-website-status.com/. Great info to consider when you choose which shortener to use! Especially if you’re impatient like me, I want everything on the web to be as fast as possible!

Well this was one hell of a busy weekend!
Fri night I drove from Orlando to Sarasota to visit my weekend house and enjoy an appointment with a masseuse.
Sat headed down to Ft Myers to visit friends over some tableside hibachi japanese steak.
After a late nite out, I accidentally overslept for the event that was the highlight of the weekend.
A bunch of fellow car enthusiasts rented out the Dade Collier Training Airport for the day.
Why? To run some 1 mile top speed races! The 1/4 mile is fun, but the full 1 mile race separates the men from the boys.
There were many cars over the 180mph level, with some of the top guys hitting 200mph+.
Let me tell ya something, airport runway tarmac in the middle of the FL summer is a F$#%ING hot place to be!
I definitely plan to run my own car at one of the next similar events, but I will wait until Dec or Jan so the weather is nicer.
My turbos are much happier in the cold air!

for quite awhile now, a bunch of fellow gear heads have been meeting up on the last saturday of every month here in orlando (lake mary to be precise). it started out as more of a “get together” than an actual car show, just guys hanging out and talkin cars. but it has quickly grown into a very large event, with 100-150 cars attending. to accommodate the growth, this past weekends event was in a new location, the route46 entertainment complex. here are just a couple quick shots I took while walking around…

…i happen to be an expert at relaxing.

ask anyone that knows me, I am almost always relaxed.
however thanks to a couple bulging disks, sometimes it is not as easy to relax physically as it is mentally.

my solution?
every 2-3 weeks i schedule a 1hr therapeutic massage!
last month I missed my appointment, so this past weekend i stopped by for a 2hr visit.
i don’t think i need to elaborate on how wonderful that was!

if you have some physical or mental stress going on (and who doesn’t?!?), i highly recommend that you find a reputable licensed massage therapist in your area and treat yourself to some relaxation!

falling in love…

usually it takes awhile for me to fall in love with newer ferraris (my fave’s are the F40, 575, and 355). i never really liked the 360. after awhile the 430 grew on me and i really started to like it, especially after seeing a few in person. when the enzo came out, i didn’t really like it at all until i got to see/hear one in person.

the new Italia 458 on the other hand….well i was pretty much sold right from the sneak peak pictures. i cannot really define what it is, because the car does borrow from other recent ferraris, but something about the way this whole package came together really makes me smile. my only small gripe would be the way the headlight assembly comes WAY up the front of the car, but that is a very small complaint about an otherwise amazing looking (and sounding) vehicle.

definitely looking forward to seeing a few in person, as i am sure there will be one soon at our local orlando get together.

I really enjoyed this video. It uses music as an analogy for life to illustrate the concept that life is not just about reaching some end result, but a journey to be enjoyed.

Regardless of what is happening in my life on any given day, no matter what I get caught up in, I truly appreciate life and love living it.

check out this incredible driving footage of stefan roser blasting around the nurburgring in his 87 RUF Porsche CTR.
this is the way driving is meant to be……no ABS, no power steering, no paddle shifters, no fancy traction control, and NO FEAR!
scarily enough, he also is not wearing any helmet, proper shoes, or driving gear of any kind….and theres traffic on the ‘ring.
this man has a pair the size of beach balls…. he is driving beyond the limit ….this is 11/10ths.

I always knew I should have a blog up, but I have this little problem, maybe you can relate. I sometimes let perfectionist tendencies stop me from actually getting anything done. Ever start working on a project, and it’s never quite good enough for you? You just keep doing little improvements here and there, and then going back and revising it, then making another change, etc etc etc…..and you never actually put the damn thing up! I was in Las Vegas recently sitting in Marshall Sylver’s living room and he gave me some advice…..he said “be ok with putting out crap”. What he means is that even though your project will never seem good enough to you, it is still better to just get it out there, because you will never get anywhere if no one ever sees it! So this will be work in progress for me, but at least it is up, and that is the first step.
